Great carribean night with oxtail stew and chicken pelau from Trinidad So yummy comfort food Music vibes and rum and pineapple were good too So handy to have outside low wall seating hangout too for overflow of happy customers

I recently visited Rootdown after hearing it was a good spot for people who like to work from cafés in Hong Kong. I am always on the lookout for places where I can sit down with my laptop for a few hours, so this immediately caught my interest. The café is probably best known for the round skylight window inside. It is definitely very aesthetic and very Instagram friendly. The space has a nice open feel with plenty of natural light, which makes it a pleasant place to spend time in. Since we planned to stay for a while, we started with a coffee and a tea, and later finished with a glass of wine each. They have a small but very modern and trendy wine selection. From a wine perspective it leans towards lighter and more contemporary styles. Personally I would have loved to see a fuller and richer white like a Chardonnay on the list, but that is just my own preference. The space itself works really well for laptop users. It is laptop friendly and also dog friendly, so you will see people quietly working over their coffees while the occasional dog walks around saying hello. They offer customer wifi with decent speed and there is a toilet tucked in the corner for guests. If you need power though, keep in mind that sockets are limited. I only noticed one by the counter table near the entrance. The tables in the middle of the room are not connected to electricity because the wall behind them is actually a set of doors that can be opened up during warmer weather. One downside that is a bit unavoidable is the noise level in the afternoon. After school hours it can get quite loud from the kids playing and shouting in the playground outside. Not really anyone’s fault, but something to keep in mind if you are trying to focus. Overall I had a really nice time here. I would definitely come back for a relaxed weekend morning laptop session or to share a bottle of wine with friends after work.
