Fantastic food that’s only exceeded by its exceptional service. Great French cuisine in the heart of Durham and a definite must visit! The steak frites were amazing! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: $60–70

Just the right size: small enough to be intimate, but big enough that you don't feel like you're eating in a closet. It can get loud when full even at normal conversation levels because of concrete/brick walls. People in their teens, 20s, and 30s won't have a problem. Those over 40 may find it occasionally hard to hear. The server during our last visit (August 2026) was friendly, informed, and kind. Rue Cler has a relaxed pace, much like restaurants in France, meaning that you get to linger over your meal and enjoy the company of your party. The food is exquisite, as good as anything we've had at other top restaurants in the area. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: $100+ Recommendation for vegetarians: Would not recommend Vegetarian offerings: Clearly labeled vegetarian dishes Vegetarian options: Vegetarian options are extremely limited. We saw exactly one vegetarian main dish on the menu: "chef's selection of roasted vegetables." That doesn't exactly sound appealing, especially not given the prices. Parking space: Somewhat difficult to find parking Parking options: Free street parking, Paid street parking, Free parking garage, Paid parking garage Parking: The small garage on Chapel Hill St is often full. Use the bigger garage on Rigsbee Avenue. Kid-friendliness: I wouldn't bring toddlers.

When I tell you this was the best meal I've ever had, I'm not exaggerating. I'm visiting Durham for the first time and wanted to try something out of my comfort zone and that would challenge me. The bartender, Jordan, whom waited on me was extremely knowledgeable and really took care of me. Every dish was exceptional from beginning to end.
