Nestled on Ki Lung Street in Sham Shui Po, Runners' Foods stands out as Hong Kong’s very first running-themed café, seamlessly blending a home-like, relaxed vibe with an inspiring community mission. Stepping inside, the walls are adorned with marathon bibs and medals from around the globe, while custom neon lighting at the storefront thoughtfully preserves the local signature street night view. Founded by 74-year-old Pastor Dino Wong 黃志誠牧師, the space reflects immense heart and dedication. Pastor Dino’s personal journey is nothing short of extraordinary; despite battling a chronic heart illness and relying on medication, he took up running on a friend's suggestion to try and overcome his condition. His sheer perseverance completely transformed his health, ultimately allowing him to stop taking his medication after three years. As Pastor Dino shared with me, the café, the Christ Transcending Poverty Church, which holds its masses in the venue an hour before opening hours, and Healthy Runner Limited all operate independently in the exact same spot, united by the very same mission. Under Healthy Runner Limited, the organisation hosts weekly running classes at $500 for a four-lesson course, collaborates with the adidas Running app, and holds prestigious accolades, including the SDG Enterprise Awards Certificate for Outstanding Enterprise 2025 and the Hong Kong Christian Service Child-Friendly Award Scheme (2024–2026), an initiative inspired by the United Nations' Child-Friendly Cities concept to foster inclusive communities alongside the local catering sector. This holistic ecosystem further extends into healthcare via affiliated practices, such as the Prospecific Chiropractic Centre in Mongkok and the Runners Family Medicine Clinic on Apliu Street in Sham Shui Po, where Dr. Eric Chan, an Obstetrics and Gynaecology specialist, supports local well-being. The warm, welcoming atmosphere is further enhanced by the lovely elderly staff, mostly in their 60s, and Pastor Dino himself, who is extraordinarily friendly, talkative, and accepting of everyone regardless of their background. During my visit, I watched him passionately share running techniques, warm-up routines, and words of encouragement with diners, while other first-time customers enjoyed heartfelt conversations or quietly read from the café's selection of books. Near the entrance, four specially commissioned illustration boards guide patrons on proper running form, complementing the café's commitment to wellness. This philosophy extends directly to their menu, which focuses on healthy, low-sugar, low-salt, and low-oil dishes. I ordered the lasagna pot for $98, which arrived piping hot after a brief 15-minute wait, accompanied by two slices of sourdough bread. The meal left me feeling thoroughly happy and satisfied. With outdoor seating available at the front and a unique concept that truly nourishes both body and soul, this inspiring spot is a hidden gem! Just keep in mind that neither card payments nor Octopus cards are accepted, so be sure to bring cash or PayMe (though WeChat Pay or Alipay may also be options).
