The establishment boasts a relaxed ambiance surrounded by beautiful gardens and old oak trees, making it the perfect location for a romantic date or a lazy Sunday morning. The interior design is elegant and refined, with attention to detail in every aspect. Prices are on the higher end, but commensurate with the quality of the experience. Located at the end of Allandale Road, Rust en Vrede offers stunning views of the surrounding vineyards and mountains. The wine list is extensive, with some must-try options including the Donkiebaai Chenin and the Donkiebaai Grenache Blanc, both made with grapes from the family's beach house near Donkiesbaai. Overall, Rust en Vrede Wine Estate is a must-visit for anyone looking for an unforgettable dining experience in the heart of Stellenbosch's wine country.
What a very underwhelming experience we had. I had called in advance to enquire, whether if we had to make a booking for their lunch. The person on the phone said there was no need, as the restaurant will be open and I can order when we get to the estate. For reasons unbeknownst to me, our waiter told us that we needed to make a booking for their lunch 2 months in advance. Our thrill of the wine tasting and pairing it with our lunch was shorten in length. The subtle discrimination was evident that we were not wanted by the waiter at that estate. We felt isolated and to make matters worse, a pair of white seniors male and female, seated across us I got the impression that she was taking pictures or videos of us. I would never recommend this place to anyone, especially since we weren’t made to feel inclusive.
This was our second visit to the Winemaker’s Lunch at this beautiful winery. The setting is gorgeous in the garden terrace outside the restaurant and wine tasting building. There is a limited choice for the lunch but all are superbly cooked and presented - a peppered fillet steak with salad and fries, a sirloin steak with garlic butter plus salad and fries and finally, pan fried salmon with sautéed potatoes and salad. Between the 4 of us we tried each dish and were just overwhelmed with the quality and taste. Each meal is accompanied by selected wines from the vineyard and these were carefully explained by the waiting staff who were very knowledgeable and extremely attentive. I would say that my medium rare fillet steak was probably the best I’ve ever tasted. Thoroughly recommended.
The commentary on Arno’s insights into the red wines of Rust en Vrede Wine Estate is refreshing and engaging. It shifts the focus from conventional wine critique (aging, or notes of tobacco and oak) to a more vibrant appreciation of enthusiasm and terroir. Arno’s understanding of the Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and red blends shines through, highlighting how the region’s intense moisture and humidity shape the wine’s character. This perspective offers a compelling, grounded take that celebrates the estate’s unique essence beyond mere technicalities.
