I’m sure this review will not come as a shock to the staff that served us. My family came to Rutherford Grill to celebrate the 44th wedding anniversary of our parents; our Dad passed away one month prior, and we wanted to cheer our Mom up by taking her out to her favorite spot to celebrate. Rutherford Grill: a place that was the first restaurant that my Dad ever took me, his daughter, on a special Father/Daughter date, and a spot him and my Mom frequented for special occasions. It’s been a special place for my family over the past 25 years. I initially made a reservation for 4 adults. I called the day prior to inform the host that we’d be a party of 7: 5 adults and 2 small children, to which she responded while we couldn’t reserve one of the larger booths, we could walk in. No other information was given to me, so I assumed that a party of 5 adults and 2 children would be no issue. When we arrived, dressed up and excited to give the 2 grandkids their first Shirley temples and a fancy dinner with Grammie, the hostess told me that it would be ideal if we took 2 tables instead. I replied that I was told over the phone that our party would fit at a larger booth since two in our party were small children. She said that was fine and we were put on the list to take a large booth. We bought a round of drinks and Shirley temples at the bar while we waited outside for 40 minutes. At this point, I should’ve been told a large booth would not be possible; as disappointing as that would be, we’d be able to make the decision to find a different spot for dinner. Instead, we were seated, with room to spare in the booth. Happy. And ordering appetizers. And making a toast to my Mom on what would’ve been her 44th wedding anniversary. Before our appetizers arrived, an employee came over and let us know that we’d have to move to 2 small tables and be separated. He then implied that we “lied” by claiming we were a party of 6. And that since there were 7 of us, we needed to move. He offered no solutions other than move from the table. I immediately said I called and also informed the hostess upon arrival of our party size, and at no point did I say we were a party of six. We were then told that in order for us to stay at the booth we were at, we would need to put one of the children on our laps. I’m not kidding. More than enough space for everyone to sit, and we’d have to lift one of the children off their seat and make them sit on our lap. I cannot begin to explain the illegal implications this demand had, let alone the sheer stupidity of a request like that. I would understand if there wasn’t room, but we had more than enough room. Our mom was upset and started to cry. We agreed to this demand to try to diffuse the situation and not upset our mom further. But it truly ruined what began as a lovely evening. We rallied and made the most of the situation. But at the expense of our entire party (including the kids) feeling like we had somehow done something wrong, when in reality, the team at Rutherford effed up. We should’ve never been sat. We should’ve never been told we could be sat. Once sat, your team should’ve taken the L and let us enjoy our evening, as paying patrons of your rigid joke of an establishment. Instead, we were made to feel like unwelcome guests in a members only country club. To the wait staff having to enforce this “rule”: I am sorry, I know you were all as uncomfortable as we were. I wish your management had the courage to enforce their own policies themselves. To the Chef: I’d be embarrassed by how this situation was handled. Your dishes are the only thing that made our evening bearable. With so many amazing restaurants to compete with in Napa Valley, you would think that the management of this restaurant would take into consideration that once a patron is gone, they have no reason to return.
