This place is mids at best. Don't be fooled by authentic Japanese owners, the food and service are subpar. Ordered "ebi" tempura. Apparently it is tempura shrimp and vegetables; what arrived was 4 pieces of thick potato, one huge soggy piece of raw broccoli, and two tiny premade (pre breaded when purchased) shrimp. The fact that they use pre breaded shrimp for their tempura is a freaking joke and very sad. Also their sushi rolls are mostly rice, and the rice is not authentic Japanese sushi recipe but just plain boring white rice. I'll never return. The waiter commented that he didn't like my hoodie bc the sports team it reflects wasn't one he rooted for. Horrible service. Overpriced. Rolls tasted horrible: fish looked old (Tuna bomb), and some rolls had MUSTARD on them (why?), Some had too much salt&sugar (why?). We did not finish our rolls and left early. That night, we got sick and spent the night and the next day on the toilet. Sorry to be so harsh, but that was our experience. Mikuni was closed due to maintenance, so my friend and I ended up having lunch here. Typically, we meet at Mikuni and spend about two hours dining in. Samurai Sushi was always appealing as you head east on HWY 50, and after so many years, today happened to be that day. We walked in and got seated. The restaurant was clean and seemed to have local dinners. Order Yakitori and Soft Shell Crab for appetizer, which was okay. I ordered some rolls for us off the menu, and one of the rolls was recommended by the server. Two of three rolls ordered came with some sort of gravy and looked more like rice and gravy. I was surprised to see this combination. Overall, I didn't like the roll and had plenty left on our plates. Service was okay. My first experience was not worthy enough for me to return.
