Slightly off the beaten track for Western visitors to Tokyo but strongly recommended—particularly for rum lovers, where a visit is essential. The bar is up four flights of stairs, and once you get there, you are greeted with a small, beautifully curated space that seats about 12 people at a push. Screwdriver is not a place for a larger group or guests who have had a few drinks before arriving. It is also a rum bar, and no other beverages are available. But what a rum bar - the most impressive collection of rum I have ever seen adorns all of the shelves and back bar. These are not merely decorations; every bottle is in use. I asked if any Barbancourt was available and was pleasantly surprised when the barman pulled down a bottle of 15-year-old Estate Reserve, a fine drop. Rum-based cocktails are also on offer and are excellently executed; the old-fashioned I received was delicious, but so was the Pina Colada and Dark and Stormy. In this way, everyone can enjoy something on the menu, and tasty and reasonably priced snacks are also available. Service was polite and attentive, and the barman’s passion for rum was on display as he guided local patrons through different rum options and drink choices. Screwdriver is a unique concept executed with grace and excellent service in the Japanese tradition. I hope to return someday. Price per person: ¥5,000–6,000 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
