Tucked away in plain sight on the corner was SEAR by Tungthit. The Internet sent me here to try out their burger and I'm not complaining. First off, the charcoal aroma was splendid. You don't just get hit by it as you enter the store but it's clearly seared into the aroma of the burger itself. The combination of the char, truffles, chilies, onion and pickles all works very well. It's a unique burger in comparison to your more common options, definitely to my liking. Only complaints would be that my patty was abit overdone to my preference and the choice of bread bun they use but that's just personal preference. The burger was still delicious from all angles. Service was quick and the lady even brought it out to me as I was waiting outside, which was a nice little touch. The store itself is quite small and you'll get covered in smoke and smell from the grill going but it does set the scene. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: $1–20

Tried the grilled chicken Banh Mi at Sear by Tungthit in Springvale after seeing it everywhere on Instagram. The sauce was decent and veggies were fresh, but the chicken had a fishy smell and the bread was too thin and flaky — more like a pastry than a proper Banh Mi roll. It couldn’t hold the filling and fell apart easily. Overpriced compared to the classic spots nearby. Meal type: Lunch Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 2

Viet salt bae steak man opened a banh mi and charcoal meat shop. Rosie rates Rotisserie came for the charcoal chicken and tried the steak and eggs banh mi too! Here’s my verdict: • Charcoal chicken ($19) - super juicy chicken thigh with a nice char flavour, it already came drenched in a sweet banh mi style sauce and a suspicious jizz butter that I did not know about (it was truffle butter). The chips were great and fresh, love shoestring fries so that was great! I wish they gave more chicken and the sauce became too sweet and sickening, it just didn’t make sense that it came with it and i would have preferred some sort of savoury gravy? • Banh mi ($13) - crispy tiger bread, nice pickles and egg however, although the meat was tender it was more like a thin sliced brisket rather than actual ‘steak’ (maybe a minute steak?). It also came in the same sweet Banh mi steak sauce and it overpowered the taste of any pate or mayo. It was okay tbh I wouldn’t come again for this one, maybe I’d like the grilled chicken one better.
