There are places that don’t impress you with luxury or fancy interiors, but simply because they feel genuine. Skála is exactly that kind of place. A small, traditional Greek taverna literally on the shore of Lake Volvi, far away from the usual tourist crowds. Most of the people eating here are locals, which for me is always a very good sign. Nothing pretentious or overly polished – just peace, nature, good food, and that authentic feeling of Greece that is becoming harder to find in the popular tourist areas. The setting is wonderful. You sit just a few meters from the water, with ducks and geese casually wandering around the tables and plenty of other birds nearby. The view across the lake towards the mountains makes the atmosphere even more special. You can simply sit, enjoy your food and watch the water – and honestly, you don’t need much more than that. We really enjoyed the food as well. Here you can try fresh freshwater fish caught directly from the lake, which alone makes the place worth visiting. If you’re used to eating mostly sea fish at Greek tavernas, the taste is different and definitely worth trying. Everything we ordered was fresh, tasty and well prepared. The service was excellent – friendly, relaxed and natural, without the impersonal feeling you sometimes get in very touristy places. For us, this was one of those places you discover almost by accident and end up remembering. Don’t come here looking for a fancy restaurant. Come for an authentic Greek taverna, local people, fresh lake fish, ducks wandering around your table, and the beautiful view over Lake Volvi. Another detail we really appreciated was how typically Greek and traditional the whole experience felt. They still welcome you with bread and water at the table, the way Greek tavernas traditionally do – something that, unfortunately, many places have stopped doing nowadays. It’s a small gesture, but it adds to the feeling that this place has kept its authentic character rather than changing to suit mass tourism. We would definitely come back.
