DISASTER We were there on Sunday night after pre-booking 10 days previously. The barman greeted us by apologising for: NO draught beers/ciders available because the system had been down all day and the repairman was taking the night off, only one bottled lager and no bottled ales... AND the menu was limited to cod & chips or scampi & chips. Against our better judgement we decided to stay and make the most of a bad start (where were we going to go at that time on a Sunday night?). The only things special about their "special 'fish and chip' night" was the lack of any other meals, the fact that they were VERY basic, and VERY expensive compared to the two previous nights where we enjoyed meals at pubs with normal pub menus. There was plenty of time for the staff to contact us with a heads-up about both problems, and the barman alluded to this.

Could be so much more. Recently visited the Smugglers Inn while holidaying in the area after reading lots of great reviews; I’ll start with the good points which was the food - this was genuinely very nice and a nice selection across the menu. Nicely prepared and certainly better than the average pub food. Was reasonably priced too and arrived within an acceptable time after ordering. Things to improve on in my opinion was the overall presentation of the place, in particular the exterior and the grounds it sat in. So much potential but it just felt like nobody cared about it with no pride or care taken with the upkeep in respect of this. Everywhere just needs a good tidy up, clean and paint. The service was very mediocre also; this felt like it was down to a lack of unenthusiastic, unprofessional and untrained young members of staff severely letting the team down who had little to know idea of how to carry out their job. The two slightly older team members who I encountered (a lady serving front of house and a gentleman in the kitchen; I would hazard a guess at these being the owners/managers) were much better at their jobs and far more enthusiastic but seemed to be having to pick up the pieces of the lack luster younger members and were dragged from pillar to post making up for their lack of work and skill. Would I return or should you visit? In short I’d say yes but only if there were a few small changes implemented that could help make this place a real gem and a great place to visit!
