SP2 Communal Bar + Restaurant?  When I first came across that name, I initially thought "whatta stupid name!"  It wasn't until after I sat down on their swank patio area, where it hit me.  "SP" is for San Pedro.  "2" stands for square.  Git it?!  Oh them tricky hipsters! Very ambitious space.  Large outdoor loungey area, and large indoor dining that seems like an extension of the patio because there seemed like no walls to separate the two.  Ideal for that SJ climate. Drinks seemed small to me.  So after one cocktail I switch over to beer.  And they've got a nice list but the majority being craft/imports in bottles.  Draft selections will be way under $10 while cocktails will start at $10.  Hence my switch. Food really good here.  But you won't get the feel for their skills if you only stick with their cheap happy hour bites.  You're gonna have to dig deep in your wallet and try some of the more substantial offerings.  It's all sharable, so bring company and just let a good time unfold. Happy Hour Wings ($6) We tried this just for shits and giggles and at that price, no harm.  Nice sized wings but the sauce was a tad too hot.  Also the sauce didn't really adhere to the wings, so it was really messy.  Just a bit awkward when you have a nice cloth napkin.  Their linen company must hate them. Pappardelle with Beef/Pork Bolognese ($19)  Very solid.  Textbook actually.  Who would of thought that one of the best pasta dishes in the Silicon Valley was actually not in an Italian restaurant, haha.  The ribbons of pasta were light but with a good chew.  The sauce was intensely meaty with a slight sweet edge, maybe from the visible fine diced carrots.  But the hallmark of a good Bolognese is that the sauce does not exceed the pasta.  There was only enough sauce for the pasta to absorb.  And with fresh grated parm, I was infatuated. Caeser Salad ($13)  I heard the consulting chef here had ties with Oola in the SOMA SF.  I loved the caeser there, so I wanted to see the connection.  Yup, it seemed really similar especially with the addition of whole fillets of white anchovies.  Croutons kind of weird with a cumin note, but the use of baby colored lettuces, justified the totality.  This salad with the pasta was an ideal combo. Skirt Steak ($32) was pretty legit.  The beef was oh-so-good.  Skirt is one of my favorite cuts, a bit of a springy chew, great beef flavor just hits home with me.  Nicely grilled I must add.  The starch they paired with this though was a bit confusing to me.  It was a crisp risotto cake.  I love risotto.  And I usually like the crisp rice on the bottom of a bimbimbap bowl.  But this cake, though tasty was texturally strange.  First risotto is really starchy and thick.  And when you crisp such starch, the crunch is almost cumbersome for the chewing process.  Really chewy and sticky.  It grew on me a bit, but my first bites were "what the heck?!" I do have a little gripe with the outdoor dining area.   The furniture is really low to the ground, like barely 1 foot off the ground.  Cute and intimate maybe.  But really awkward for the servers who have to look at you like a dog on a cushion, and quite challenging to stoop that low to drop off food and drink.  A little precarious in my opinion. Obviously I wasn't drunk enough to be able to get so nit picky, huh?  But up them glassware SP2, and maybe I'll have few more.  Hint, hint.
