Loved it. The place is pretty and typical Japanese. We sat on cushions. Was fun. My plate was delicious and delicate not too heavy noodles with tempura shrimp and my husband a beef soup. They give you tea when you arrive at the table which is a nice attention. The service is friendly and always with a smile. I highly recommend Price per person: ¥1,000–2,000 Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

I've not eaten much Kyoto food before, but I imagine this bowl of udon encapsulates a lot of what makes Kyoto food distinctly Kyoto. The bowl of udon is simple. There wasn't much that stood out about it, besides the shape of the noodles and the delicious, slightly charred, fried tofu (which was actually pretty unique, now that I think about it). But it's that simplicity that makes it so charming. Each ingredient is amazingly fresh and their flavors are brought forth, with none of them crowding out the others. The broth is classic slightly fishy dashi, with an almost tea-like aroma. The noodles are soft and chewy. The seaweed adds a hit of umami to the whole bowl. You get a cup of green tea to the accompany the meal. We were seated on a horigotatsu table, and with a full belly and a steaming cup of hot tea in our hands, we were able to fully appreciate the gorgeous garden view next to our table. Price per person: ¥1,000–2,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

A few minutes walk away from the crowds of tourists is this gem of a restaurant. I ordered the Ume and Kitsune Udon and finished every last delicious bite. The tofu has a seared flavor to it that I have never tasted before. The broth was fresh and full of umami flavor. The noodles were delicate and the ume plum topped it off with a tangy sweet and sour finish. The restaurant is cute and authentic with friendly service. At ¥810 it’s a bargain. Domo arigato Sagami.
