Very disappointed in my recent dining experience at Saltwater Restaurant Magnetic Island. As someone who does not like spicy food at all I always am sure to ask about whether food when ordering if I think that there will be spice. I had a conversation with my waiter about an item on the menu and when they advised it was spicy I explained I did not like spicy food so opted for another item on the menu - the calamari. When that dish came out it was on a bed on some sauce that was very spicy. When the waitress checked in to see how our meals were I explained my dish was very spicy and I was not able to eat it. She asked if I wanted another dish and I declined as I didn't want to be waiting on food while my dining companions had finished eating. That was my choice. I fully expected however, that I would not be charged for the dish (that they removed and neither or any of my companions ate). When I went to pay, the host (who I believe may be a partner in the business) charged me for both dishes I had. I explained the situation and she said that of course it was spicy as it had "XO" in it. I said I didn't recall seeing that on the menu but I also had no idea was XO was and would assume that given my conversation with the waiter he would have suggested that not be a good dish for me to order due to this XO. She said "I wasn't privvy to that conversation". Her attitude was rude and dismissive. I chose to pay for the dish and leave - never to return. I have since done some research regarding what XO is and it seems it's a sauce made with chilli's. Some other concerns - the tables were rickety with a napkin positioned under one of the legs of our table to assist it not to wobble (although it was still unstable) and service generally felt like we were being rushed through and it was not warm or friendly. The entree was cold. We ordered the stuff squid.
Mains were reef & beef, pork belly.were pretty ordinary & cold.
We were charged a corkage fee. No one came near us to give us any kind of service regarding our drinks we brought along.
The blow flys were thick as. 6 blow flys each, trying to share our meal. 2 flys.
It wasn't a nice experience. We had our Serviettes chasing the flys while we tried to get a mouth full of food.
They book us in on Saturday night. The problem was they closed for two weeks
So we had to go on Friday 3rd.
The senior lady was extremely rude. Got really nasty. Told me I was racist. I work with Disability & all types of nationality.

We dined at Saltwater twice during our stay on Magnetic Island and experiences could not have been more different.
For our first visit the service, food and ambiance was faultless. Our main courses of duck and spatchcock were exceptional. This prompted us to book for a second night.
Sadly the experience was very disappointing. The service was very slow, it took over 45 minutes for our entrees to arrive. In fairness to the restaurant, we were given a complimentary entree when we complained about the wait.
The main course of Wagyu beef was over cooked, extremely salty and more like minute steak. The salmon was entree sized and, also, very salty.
Incredibly the restaurant on this occasion was quieter than the first.
Perhaps the staff work better under pressure.
