In case the rain took you by surprise during the promenade around Riga Town Hall Square, stop by this restaurant. Many people come to try nicely cooked pork hock, salmon appetizers and chicken & dumplings. Tasty pancakes, chocolate fondant and crème brûlée might be what you need. A lot of visitors order delicious draft beer, ale or mulled wine. Dark coffee is good, try it.

I think Salve was our favorite dinner experience in Riga. My wife, adult daughter and I spent a week in Riga, and the combination of food, service and setting worked to make this a high point of our trip. We were looking for a traditional Latvian restaurant in Old Town, and we walked in to find the outdoor seating, under huge umbrellas, almost empty. The restaurant is tucked away in a corner of the square with the big "Riga" sign - great views but lighter foot traffic than you'd expect. As for the food, it was all really well prepared and delicious. The traditional black peas and bacon were surprisingly savory and delicious for such a simple dish, and my daughter spent the rest of the trip wanting to go back for a second round of her chicken dumplings. We had an issue while there - my wife ordered the potato pancakes with smoked salmon but they brought her a broiled salmon fillet dinner by mistake. After a hilarious "are you sure?" it was taken care of and they brought my wife a shot of the famous Black Balsam liquor to make up for it. While we were eating, a rainstorm passed over, but the gargantuan umbrellas kept us dry enough, and we had a very special-feeling dinner listening to the rain, smelling the fresh air and watching the cobblestones on the square glistening, while the Swedish tourists next to us helped us scoot closer to evade the rain. All in all, a great experience, and a high point of our week in Riga. I had a great experience at the Salve restaurant. The service is great. The atmosphere is good also. The staff members are friendly, helpful , and they speak English. The food is very good. I ordered the Latvian food tasting ( 5 meals) and I wasn't disappointed. The menu included fish, black peas, pork ribs with cabbage, and dessert with a traditional Latvian alcoholic beverage. Every single dish was delicious. The pelmeni (dumplings) with chicken are very tasty. Reasonable prices. I highly recommend this restaurant.
