As a Penangite, this is a no for me, and here's why based on the dishes I ordered: Teh tarik: You can definitely see that it's pulled, but it's much less sweet and rich, so I guess you could call it a "healthier" version. Roti canai: Crispy on the outside, but gooey and mushy in the centre. I'm guessing it was frozen? The dhal was also quite watery, although it was spicy, which I found a bit odd. Fried rice: The flavour is there, but it was quite dry, and the meat was dry as well. It felt like the flavour was sitting on top of the food rather than actually being blended into it. Nasi lemak: I agree with WH Choo on this one. First of all, whatever the reason it came without an egg, fine no big deal. The chicken tasted slightly off and the sambal... I don't know which region of Sambal this is, but why is there so much oil vs paste? I've made sambal with anchovies like you mentioned before, and the oil wasn't nearly as separated as this, nor did it taste this bland. At this price point, I'd honestly recommend visiting Med Salleh to get a better idea of what good nasi lemak can be like. Again, taste is very subjective, and I can see that plenty of people in this review section enjoy the food. That's completely fair. But there's a difference between "authentic" food and "good" food. Mr Yeoh, thank you for taking time to write Sambal Sim a long review. I will surely reflect your review with the kitchen and improve. We value every single review from our customers. The Sambal Sauces are from the region of the indigenous ethnic group of Borneo called Kadazan-Dusun in Sabah, my sister-in-law is a native Kadazan-Dusun in Sabah, my mother is a Chinese, most of the dishes are their recipes, so I would say Sambal Sim’s menu is made of a restaurant-style fusion home-cooked recipes. I totally agree with you, taste is very subjective so please allow Sambal Sim to keep her authenticity, she never aims to be like any other Malaysian restaurants so she may be called ‘authentic’ whereas she herself is an authentic self but having said so, I understand that running a restaurant, have to put ‘my way my liking’ one side, so we will take all constructive criticisms on board and improve. Our aim is indeed to share good food with authentic roots.
