I traveled all the way to Mito City in Ibaraki Prefecture specifically to try the monkfish hot pot. I made a reservation in advance, but when I arrived, the restaurant was quite empty. Given how few customers there were, it honestly felt like I could have walked in without a reservation. It certainly did not give the impression of a place where reservations are truly necessary. As for the main attraction, the monkfish hot pot itself, it was frankly disappointing. I did not find it particularly tasty. When it comes to monkfish hot pot, I was expecting a rich broth, the depth of flavor from the liver, and a clear character that makes you think, “This is what monkfish hot pot should be.” Unfortunately, none of that came through. There was no distinctive feature that set this dish apart, and the flavor left little impression overall. Considering the effort it takes to travel here, it is hard to say that it is worth the trip. It might be acceptable as a casual local option, but if you are choosing a destination specifically to eat monkfish hot pot, this place does not offer a convincing reason to do so. Given the high expectations, the experience ended up being quite disappointing. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: ¥4,000–5,000 Food: 2 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 2

Speaking of monkfish hotpot in Mito, I used Sansui here. I tried to make a reservation by phone the day before, but the reserved seats were already taken and I had to line up on the day. Dinner starts at 17:00, and numbered tickets can be issued from 16:30. Monkfish hotpot is quite large enough for one person to eat, so it's enough for a couple to eat together. The soup stock is strong but delicious, and the monkfish is perfect for its protein flavor. Separately, I ordered red bean liver, natto tempura, and gamecock kamameshi. Even if you make tempura, natto is delicious and has a different flavor. As expected of Mito! ! Also, the gamecock kamameshi was very delicious and perfect as a finishing touch. The strong flavor of the hot pot makes it even better! I'm very satisfied! It's quite crowded at the end of the year, so I thought you'd need to make an early reservation!
