After enjoying the warm Adriatic Sea in Rimini, we were hungry and happy to find a place near our hotel with several vegan options. We checked a couple of recent reviews and thought, andiamo! Unfortunately, the food was a big disappointment. The vegan burger was undercooked, with a tomato that was strangely white inside and completely tasteless. The wholemeal spelt strozzapreti with vegetables were just as bland. Then came the vegan pizza. Mamma mia! Extremely thin and underbaked, it was more like a big, soggy sheet of lasagna with cheap canned tomato sauce than a pizza. We weren’t the only ones disappointed. Another family nearby was also complaining about their regular pizza. Even the non-vegan Strozzapreti “Sbionta” ordered by someone in our group were bland, with chewy pasta. The huge menu offers a little bit of everything, but unfortunately, it felt like a classic case of “jack of all trades, master of none.” Basically, your typical tourist trap. After dinner, we went back to the reviews and filtered by the lowest ratings. Suddenly, several of them sounded remarkably similar to our own experience. Our lesson from this Friday night: next time, don’t just check a couple of recent reviews. Have a look at the lowest ones too! And if you still end up at Sbionta, perhaps just order the wine.
