The food was less than usual. I had fish pie which was as always very tasty but it was more mashed potato than usual and far less fish. Not worth the money.

The food was lovely and I genuinely can’t fault it. Unfortunately, what has brought my star rating down was my experience as a parent with a child who has additional support needs. Not long after arriving, my son had an unexpected meltdown. I completely acknowledge that he was distressed and that the level of noise and disturbance could have been disruptive to other diners. That was exactly why I was trying to get him outside and away from everyone as quickly as I could. Usually, in situations like this, I’ve experienced a little understanding or assistance, but here I felt like both my son and I were being judged by the stares we received from diners and staff. I was stuck with him on the floor in the walkway while trying to get him out of the building and away from the other diners. Rather than simply saying “excuse me”, one customer stood there giving me a very judgemental look, clearly expecting me to move him instead of taking the other route. Multiple members of staff also watched and stared without offering any support. Once I eventually managed to get my son outside to calm down, the same man and his friends continued to openly stare and judge him. As much as I wanted to leave after that experience, I still had to feed my children, so we ordered and ate our meal which, as I said, was lovely. I honestly haven’t felt that awful in a very long time, and the experience really opened my eyes to how quickly people can judge a child and parent without knowing what they’re dealing with. It was a horrible experience, and I hope restaurants like Shard Riverside can learn from situations like this and think about how they can better support families with additional needs. I completely appreciate that the restaurant can’t control the behaviour of its customers, but staff showing a little understanding or offering support could make a huge difference and prevent an already difficult situation from becoming even more distressing. Everyone should feel welcome when dining out, including families whose children may sometimes show struggles.
