They are ripping the people off charging per item you buy a sales taxes ask for your receipt the next time you buy anything from here. In Texas, the sales tax you pay at a supermarket depends on whether an item is considered a "food product" or a "prepared food". Most basic grocery items are tax-exempt, but a variety of other items are taxable. This means that out of your three items, some may be taxed while others are not. Tax-exempt items (most groceries) Most common grocery items are not subject to sales tax, including: Bread, flour, and sugar Milk, eggs, and most dairy products Fresh fruits and vegetables Unprepared meat and seafood Spices and condiments Baking products, like cake mixes and icing Taxable items Sales tax is charged on items that are not considered "food products" for at-home preparation. Prepared food Ready-to-eat food: Any food sold in a heated state, such as a rotisserie chicken or hot soup. Food with utensils: Items sold with eating utensils like plates, forks, or straws are considered prepared and are taxed. Bakery items, like a slice of pie, become taxable if served with a plate or fork. Deli items: Sandwiches and other foods from a deli that are ready to eat. Snack foods and drinks Snack-sized items: Individual-sized snacks, including chips, candy, and cookies, are taxable. Larger multi-packs are generally not taxed. Sodas and flavored water: Soft drinks, sports drinks, and other beverages containing less than 50% fruit or vegetable juice are taxable. Candy and gum: These items are always taxable, even if sold in a multipack. Non-food items Household goods: Non-food products like paper towels, cleaning supplies, pet food, and over-the-counter medicines are always taxable. How tax is calculated When you check out at the supermarket, the system automatically applies the correct tax status to each item. The total sales tax is calculated by adding up the taxable items and multiplying that subtotal by the combined sales tax rate for your location. For example, if you bought a bottle of wine (taxable), a gallon of milk (exempt), and a package of paper towels (taxable), only the wine and paper towels would be included in the subtotal used to calculate sales tax. I bought 2 items per item I was charged per sales taxes against state regulations.
