Not only should Okuhikawa Shrine be visited, but also Shinchan. The gracious staff works hard, stays positive and makes this place great. Service at this restaurant is something one can name spectacular. Come here for the nice atmosphere. The overall score of Shinchan on Google is 4.3.

A great little izakaya! There's no English menu so it's better if you can speak a little Japanese (the menu was written on a whiteboard so if you can read Japanese that's even better). The host is very friendly & helpful. And the food was delicious! Price per person: ¥1,000–2,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

Izakaya Shinchan is located in the middle of Yanagikoji, one of the two alleys in front of Okutama Station. 8 seats at the counter, 4 to 6 seats at the tatami room (one kotatsu). My mother is managing everything by herself. There are many local regulars, and it takes a bit of courage to enter, but even if you're just a first-time customer, moms and regulars alike will talk to you a lot. This is not recommended if you do not want to be talked to. The menu includes fried chicken, gyoza, grilled fish, shredded yam, yakko, fried tofu, and oden. Karaage is a whole piece of thigh meat that is fried and is very juicy. The gyoza are authentic, handmade from the filling to the filling. There is no rice, so it does not function as a restaurant. This restaurant has many local customers, so I think it's the perfect place to enjoy the nighttime atmosphere of Okutama.
