While the food and coffee at Shugaa Place are of good quality, it is exorbitantly priced (more than a Manhattan Starbucks) and I felt the owner treated me rudely. As a writer, I frequented Shugaa quite a lot because it was seldom crowded and I wanted to support a black-owned business. I typically spent the equivalent of $ 8 or $ 9 and on multiple occasions spent as much as $ 20. I am certainly not impolite to the staff or other customers and tip well. Despite this, the owner sent her cook to tell me that I can only sit in her cafe for 90 minutes from now on out. I was tremendously offended. First, I've NEVER seen anyone waiting for a table and if there was, she could easily solve the problem by breaking up the seating arrangements which are all intended for at least four people. And secondly, I found it rude that the owner who I know speaks English and is there every day, would have her cook, whose English is broken, to inform me of this bizarre new rule that, I presume is intended only for me. As much as it pains me to do so, I do not recommend.
