Michelin Guide rating

Bib Gourmand: good quality, good value cooking.

This tiny basement operation in the suburb of Stockbridge comes with dark, moody décor and impressive cooking from the get-go. The menu of rustic sharing plates pushes flavour-packed British ingredients to the fore and the dishes are pleasingly free of superfluous elements, allowing their central components to shine... Lovely dinner, really cool experience. The staff was so nice, and the food delicious (as well as the cocktails). This was my first restaurant in Scotland, and I was not disappointed ! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Price per person: £20–30

One of best restaurants I have been to lately, everything we ordered was extremely good and the service was superb. If I had to give a bit of feedback I would say they can improve the smoke that comes into the dining room but it’s not a big deal. We will be back!

Dined July 1st, 2026. We were very excited to visit Skua as it was our last night in Scotland after a 2-week long trip from Canada. We left hungry and incredibly underwhelmed. We were sat at 7:30. Menus and tap water were promptly dropped off. Our server did not come back to our table for us to order or to answer questions about the menu until 20 minutes later. By that point, a table that had sat shortly after us had already received their drinks and their first flew plates of food. Our server had gone and taken their order at least 10 minutes prior. It was busy but how long we waited compared to other tables was unacceptable. They were also then out of one of the cocktails we had wanted to try which was frustrating. Still the three cocktails we tried were all good and well-balanced. We ordered 5 small plates to share. Most were incredible. The brioche, steak tartare and mackerel were all delicious. We were underwhelmed by the plate of fermented and pickled vegetables and the salami. Laughably small portions for the price and nothing special. Overall most of the dishes seemed overpriced given the small portion sizes. We were still hungry after the 5 dishes but did not feel inclined to order any more given the experience so far. We were perplexed by the single raw oyster for £6.50. Seems like a very strange (and overpriced) choice for a restaurant focused on shareable plates. We asked for the optional service charge to be removed given the poor quality of the service. We mentioned the slow service at the beginning and our server got defensive instead of apologizing and blamed it on how busy the restaurant was. There was never any real acknowledgement of the time we waited to be served nor a gesture of apology, which would have gone a long way. Skua does not live up to its Bib Gourmand. We’ve dined at several other Bib Gourmand restaurants and had much better experiences at all of them. Food: 4 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 4 Price per person: £60–70
