This was my first experience here, and unfortunately, it was not a good one. I walked into the establishment and went to the counter, but I honestly wasn’t even sure who the employee was because no one acknowledged me. I stood there waiting while two women were having a personal conversation. After several minutes, one of the women finally pointed out that there was a customer waiting, yet the employee continued the conversation. Even after the other woman stepped away, the employee still did not acknowledge me. Instead of coming to the register, she went behind the counter, moved buckets around, walked to the back, came back out, picked up the phone to take another order, and continued doing other tasks while I was still standing there waiting. At no point did she greet me, let me know she would be with me shortly, or acknowledge that I had been waiting at the register the entire time. The whole experience felt very unprofessional and unwelcoming. She was not making drinks or actively helping other customers. I came in intending to support a small business after reading the owner’s story, and I make it a point to support local businesses whenever I can. However, hiring the wrong employee can jeopardize the success of a small business. The employee working never attended to me at all. Thankfully, another employee who was off the clock stepped in and helped me from start to finish so I didn’t leave empty handed. Meal type: Other Service: 1

The review about the service not being great is we have been frequenting this cafe but whenever the guy is up front I know the drinks aren’t going to be as good plus the service is always off when he’s there.. On the plus side I love their cheese jalapeño bagels they’re consistently great!! Sometimes we will try a new drink that they posted on their insta and it never comes out looking the way they posted it.. ex: the ube drink looked nothing like the picture. We finally tried the matcha and it was terrible… grainy and no flavor at all it wasn’t sweetened tasted like grass unfortunately. (We’ve been here about 8 times). Unpon coming into the shop, I was welcomed with an open, friendly environment. My group waited behind the counter along with another person. After a couple minutes a guest that was already served got up and knocked at the kitchen window to say that there were people waiting. A polite worker came out and tended to us. We ordered and the worker admitted she didn’t know what a cortado was but she will try her best to make it. I was a bit shocked because it is a classic in the specialty coffee field but it wasn’t on the menu so I understand this could be considered a “special” request. My group ordered the cortado along with a cappuccino, americano, and 3 sweets. To be a bit picky, the milk was over steamed in both milk drinks and the cortado had too much milk but the americano was prepared okay. The cookies we ordered did seemed a bit stale but the brownie was okay but it is definitely made for someone with a sweet tooth! Overall, the flavor of the coffee was okay but I wish there was a more “fresh” aspect in the pastry offered. It is not easy to open up a specialty coffee in any location but especially a small town like escalon. There are a lot of behind the scenes we don’t see: food preparation, specific coffee techniques, organization, customer tending, computer work. All these are being done by their small staff —it is not a big company that can hire as many employees as they need. What Soul Coffee has accomplished is admirable and although we did not have a perfect experience, I would come back and support this small shop! It’s definitely worth a try if you’re in the area! (In the pictures provided, there is a picture of a chai iced latte and a coffee latte. We ordered these to go for other people.)
