Southern Roots Market in Mission was one of those places that had me asking two completely different questions within five minutes: 1. Am I even in the right place? 2. WHY IS NO ONE HERE?! It was a little difficult to find, and when we first pulled up I genuinely wasn’t sure we had arrived at the right spot. But once we walked inside, WOW!!! This place is absolutely fantastic. There are fresh flowers, florals everywhere you look, beautiful décor in every direction and the CUTEST bar area with this enormous floral chandelier that immediately steals the show. Then you walk outside and there’s a gorgeous patio, too. Clearly someone put an incredible amount of thought into creating this space because there really wasn’t a bad corner in the entire place. Which brings me back to my question: WHERE WERE ALL THE PATRONS?! Seriously. How is a place this cute not packed?! And thankfully, the food and drinks were every bit as good as the surroundings. I ordered the Bee Sting coffee, and I wish I could tell you exactly what was in it, but all I remember is that it was DIVINE. Whatever you put in there, Southern Roots, keep doing it. Then came the Southern BOB. WOW. That’s really all that needs to be said. The food was every bit as memorable as the space, which is not always the case with places that are this Instagram-worthy. Sometimes you get beautiful décor and mediocre food. Southern Roots actually delivered on BOTH. Fresh flowers, a giant floral chandelier, gorgeous décor, a beautiful patio, fantastic coffee and food that makes you stop mid-bite and appreciate your life choices. The only things I’d change? Make it a little easier to figure out where you’re going when you arrive—and apparently I need everyone in Mission to discover this place because there is absolutely no reason we should have had it to ourselves! Southern Roots Market is a hidden gem in the most literal sense: slightly hidden and absolutely a gem! Horrible experience. I was sat at a table for two just before a large party showed up. I go about 15 minutes without being checked on & get to put in my whole order by the time the server showed up. The server then walks away in a hurry & doesn’t come back until after the food is walked to my table by another server. Since I waited 15 minutes to put my order in, my food came out after the large parties food & drinks, which means I waited another 30+ minutes for my food to reach the table. My server then finally checks on how the food is at the table & realizes he never brought the lattes I ordered. Instead of asking if I still wanted them, he then places the order after the fact & brings me coffee after I finished my food, then disappears for another 15 minutes. I then see him walk out of the kitchen with a tray full of deli containers of what I can assume is juice that he’s been juicing the entire time I had been horribly neglected & completely forgotten about. After all this he came by with the check already in hand. No one else other than whoever ran the food to my table touched my table, everyone seemed more inclined to bring the large party everything they needed most likely because of the auto gratuity they all knew they would be receiving from overselling food & drinks instead of properly serving any other table in the room.
