SŌWADŌ is just past Ebisu Bridge, which crosses the Shibuya River, but there is no sign. Pass through a cheerless grey corridor, then be greeted by cooks in crisp whites working in a lively interior. The eye is drawn to the ‘Genshiyaki’, skewers of fish and meat grilled slowly over a charcoal brazier as in ancient times... More info

Sowado is one of my favourite restaurants in Tokyo. I’ve dined at their sister restaurant, Sakai Shokai, but much prefer the ambience at Sowado. From start to finish, the meal felt thoughtfully composed and very satisfying. While the food may not be mind-blowing in a dramatic sense, everything is executed with care and precision, and we enjoyed every bite. The drink selection is a real highlight, with a wonderful range of sakes as well as Japanese natural wines. The meal ends with a donabe, and any leftovers are turned into small onigiri to take home - very thoughtful! The only small downside I’ve noticed is that when booking online, a tasting menu seems to be the default option for visitors, whereas locals appear to have access to an à la carte menu. The tasting menu was by no means disappointing, but I would love the opportunity to try some of the à la carte dishes next time. Price per person: ¥10,000+ Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
