Great Expectations - Sh*te Food After hearing several great things about Stanley Restaurant I was very much looking forward to dining there. However, although the location is great, the interiors are done well, service was fair and unfortunately the food was a major let down. Firstly, the har gow were excellent. Cumin lamb was dry and lacked flavour, salt and pepper oyster mushrooms were quite tasty. The prawn toast was appalling. The two main courses we ordered were extremely disappointing. Hot and tangy chicken really missed the mark in terms of balance for a dish which is technically a sweet and sour dish (something I love when done well). The Beijing (Peking) duck was unforgivably bad, the steamed pancakes were great (good thickness, they didn't dry out or crumble, technically great), the accompaniments were cucumber (prepped to early, so they were difficult to pry apart from one another) and leek, (no radish, sugar or other point of difference) and the sweet bean sauce was unfortunately hoisin sauce that tasted like it came directly out of a jar (please correct me if I'm wrong). The duck itself was dry, the skin was not crispy, the layer of treasured fat under the skin was non existent. This is not Beijing duck. Service was efficient but it sadly lacked professionalism, something you'd expect from a restaurant at this price point. Overall, the restaurant is probably a good pick for people with limited knowledge of Cantonese cuisine and proper Chinese food in general. Great for your average gwailou/ laowai, which is what this restaurant tends to cater for.
