The menu of Australian cuisine under the direction of the great chef is wonderful here. You can always enjoy perfectly cooked croquettes, ribs and gnocchi at this cafe. Good wine is worth a try here.

Sub Urban Request content removal
As part of the British Film Festival, we ventured to the Palace Cinema, Como, for the advanced screening of The Light Between Oceans. In true sub-urban style, no movie night is complete without drinks or a bite to eat. We asked one of our foodie South Yarra subscribers to recommend a restaurant in her hood. Her response? “Try South Central - great food, average decor, and make sure you ask for a booth by the window”…and that is exactly what we did. The decor is fine – the restaurant sits at the bottom of a new modern apartment block opposite South Yarra train station, so the shell would have been pretty basic. The fit out is modern, dark and sleek, yet still feels casual. The booth by the window allows for some light and plenty of people watching, as you see people hopping on and off trains at the platform. (This would have been a good restaurant choice for debriefing 'The Girl on the Train'). The staff were really friendly and were sympathetic to our bizarre mood: we arrived with swollen eyes from crying so much during the film, and were in need of a few vodkas to calm down before we could focus on the menu.

To start, we ordered the Chermoula charred lamb ribs with sticky PX sauce and lime. They were cooked well, with lamb falling off the bone, and full of flavour. Between us, we ordered a few different mains: Pan fried gnocchi with heirloom tomatoes, Persian feta, peas and soured peppers; Cone Bay barramundi with caramelised onion and Persian feta, and Smoked roast half chicken cooked in the Inka charcoal oven with pineapple, chilli, burnt lime and labne. Totally engrossed in debriefing the film, we weren’t paying much attention as we chomped away at our meal, until someone stopped and commented on the deliciousness of the food. Every dish was bursting with flavour, and satisfied the craving for good quality, honest food. The wine list is quite extensive and covers lots of regions.

South Central is an all-day eatery with some interesting 'morning eat' choices if you’re game to steer away from the traditional poached eggs and muesli.

Overall, this is a welcome addition to South Yarra and locals would be happy to have a cafe/restaurant that offers great, tasty food. It appears they have managed to get the simple things right, and that is a lot tougher then it seems. I’m sure the upstairs apartment goers are stoked having this eatery just a stone's throw away. I’m looking forward to coming back.

BIRCHER QUEEN ???? Request content removal
The staff are fantastic here - extremely attentive, polite and friendly. We got a table for 3 easily at 10am on a Saturday morning. Interior of this place is amazing. The Bircher was one of the best I've had in Melbourne however our table agreed, a slightly larger serving would have been the perfect dish. Would happily return for it again though! Highly recommend Sth Central.

I like the people at Sth Central, really great staff and someone makes a great expresso martini! A breakfast must, which beats the ole champers and orange juice. Morning papers are fun and accompany the poached eggs and bacon, someone knows exactly how to cook eggs! My companion and I also enjoy their kromeskie, which is not on the menu anymore.
