My partner and I visited Stones in Matlock today looking forward to enjoying a glass of wine and a cheeseboard. On arrival we were asked if we had a booking. We said we didn’t, and the barman told us there was a one-year waiting list, so we left. Out of curiosity we checked the online booking system and found tables available immediately. My partner booked one, and we returned. The staff who seated us seemed confused as to why we had been told there was a year-long waiting list. Once seated, we ordered two glasses of wine and intended to order the cheeseboard. We were then told we couldn’t order just a cheeseboard and had to have a “proper meal”. We later checked the lunch menu and could find nothing stating that a main meal was required in order to order a cheeseboard. What made the experience even more confusing was that, after we left, we sat in the neighbouring sports bar overlooking the restaurant. During that time we watched two ladies sit down at Stones, order drinks, enjoy them, and then leave without appearing to order any food. Of course, it’s possible they had made arrangements we weren’t aware of, but from what we observed it seemed inconsistent with what we had been told. Restaurants are perfectly entitled to have house policies, but they should be applied consistently and explained honestly. Had we simply been told, “We reserve our tables for guests ordering full meals,” we would have accepted that and gone elsewhere. Instead, we were told there was a one-year waiting list despite tables being available, and then were given a different reason once seated. The whole experience left us feeling unwelcome, and when I asked if there was a reason he didn’t seem to want us there, I was simply told that wasn’t the case. Unfortunately, by then we felt too uncomfortable to stay. It’s a real shame because the setting is beautiful and we had been looking forward to visiting.
