I have been to Summer House a few times. I have only visited for brunch. At some point I would like to make it in for dinner. The restaurant is big, light, and airy. Even though it is big, you definitely want to make a reservation it fills up fast and with good reason. The menu is wonderful. If offers a variety, if you are trying to eat healthy - they have you covered and with more than the same boring egg white omelettes. Although on this trip I did have an omelette and it was wonderful. On the way out (courtesy of checking in on Yelp) I received a free baked good from their bakery bar in the front. I had an amazing apple oatmeal cookie. I am a stickler for coffee and they had great coffee too. Even though they were busy our server was on it as well. Overall a good experience.
The ambiance here is great. A little bit of California in the Windy City. Whether you're looking for a trendy spot in Lincoln Park to grab a drink at the bar or have a nice sit down meal, Summer House got you covered. I've been here for both brunch and dinner and I'd say I definitely prefer the food during the dinner hour. This place does get busy so do put in a reservation ahead of time. They are also Lettuce Entertain You affiliated so have to cards ready to rack up or redeem rewards. 'Til next time, cheers!
This place represents everything that's wrong with our culture in one restaurant. Basic people go here because it makes them feel like celebrities but the food is mediocre and expensive. Posting a photo of yourself in a "fancy" restaurant on Instagram doesn't make you an influencer. We made a reservation here for a special family occasion since my parents live nearby and hadn't been. There is a nice part of the restaurant that has an outdoor vibe and there is a bar side, complete with several large televisions. We were sat in the bar area and it definitely did not feel like a place we should be for a special occasion with a Cubs game on in the background. The food we ordered was all pretty flavorless and overpriced. We paid $16 for a small piece of burrata that was served with a couple of baguette slices. They didn't even bother to garnish it with some olive oil, a leaf of basil, anything that would make it restaurant quality. We got about 8 mushrooms for $10 and they used so much rosemary it totally destroyed the dish. Putting a strong herb like rosemary on a subtle vegetable like a mushroom (and using way too much of it) isn't something a great chef would do. My entree was a pounded, dry chicken breast on a bed of plain lettuce that had absolutely no flavor, and again, no extra anything that would have made it worth the price. The only thing they have going for them are the cookies. They also need to figure out their valet situation. Every single time I turn from Armitage onto Halsted I have to stop and wait for cars to let people out in front of the restaurant. I love Lettuce Entertain You and I know they could do better. I think they just don't care and they know most people don't know enough about food to know the difference as long as the environment is Instagram-able.
