Awesome fresh seafood & great choices the best coconut cake too
Great staff. Food good. Not much flavor.
This is a very long review so here are the highlights: ABSOLUTELY THE BEST RESTAURANT ON THE ISLAND. Food was amazing. Family who owns it was SO nice and welcoming. Crisp, pesticide-free unlimited salad bar. Fish tastes SO fresh & is locally caught. Blackened shrimp is to die for. Great prices, big portions, and phenomenal homemade desserts. Everything is superb. It may not look super fancy outside, but do NOT be fooled -- You'll miss out on the #1 place on this island if you pass this gem by. Longer Review: Swain Seafood Shack is all it's cracked up to be and more. We've tried all the main places on Oak Island and honestly this restaurant takes the cake for the freshest food, fair prices, and great service. This is a family owned business and the Swain family was extremely nice and welcoming. We stopped in while walking earlier in the day and decided to have dinner here because 1) their fresh no-pesticide salad bar looked great 2) the homemade dessert display looked OUT OF THIS WORLD and 3) everyone there was just really, really lovely to meet and be around! We met the owners Brett Swain (who is a fantastic cook!) and his wife, Towhee Swain (who manages the register and bakes from scratch all the beautiful desserts every day!) Fish is locally caught and the freshest you're going to find. It is sold at market price and you have the choice of it being prepared in many different ways (like grilled, blackened, fried, as a sandwich, in tacos, etc.) I started off with the salad bar, which is one of the freshest I've ever tasted and went back for seconds. Then I ordered the grouper tacos, which comes with 3 tacos and a black bean / corn salsa with slices of lime on the side. I don't think I left a crumb on the plate it was all so good. We also got an order of hush puppies and an order of fresh potato chips with ranch to share. The chips were what you would expect and were executed perfectly. They were hot, sliced thin, lightly sprinkled with a delicious seasoning, and were not just completely dripping in grease (which I liked). The hush puppies were fluffy inside (not dry) with a crisp outside and completely melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Completely 100% recommend the hush puppies. The person I had dinner with ate salad bar and a baked potato (which was only $2) for her meal and she was very happy. She agrees with me that it's definitely the best local place to eat. The desserts were being sold like they were made of gold. Almost all of the dessert sold out by closing time and it's no secret why. Each dessert is made and baked fresh in the morning before opening. The cakes are especially huge and gorgeous. We decided on a huge turtle brownie to take to-go. Towhee suggested that we heat it up for a little bit in the microwave, which is exactly what we did. The brownie was huge, moist, VERY rich, and VERY good. We added some vanilla ice cream to the brownie at home and ate way too much of it. We're still very happy from our current food comas. We will be returning tomorrow for the second day in a row. Hands down best restaurant on the island. Just trust me and thank me later. Update: Went back the next day and it was just as great if not even better. Blackened grilled shrimp with cole slaw is TO DIE FOR!! Love this place.
