Nestled in Taipei, Trastevere proudly carries the legacy of Sabatini, a name synonymous with classic Roman dining since 1958. This connection, which even extends to the "Sabatini" stamp on the plates and bowls (a detail that initially seemed a touch curious), certainly sets a stage of anticipation. You settle in, thinking you're in for an authentic Roman holiday on a plate. Our group, in a noble quest for a comprehensive taste, made the bold decision to order basically the entirety of their set menu. A marathon of dishes ensued, a parade that showcased the breadth of their offerings. This approach, while ambitious (and requiring a good appetite!), gave us a thorough sampling. However, despite the impressive array and the clear nods to its Roman parentage, the food itself proved to be the most underwhelming chapter of our visit. When benchmarked against the truly authentic, soul-satisfying flavors one encounters in the trattorias and ristorantes of Rome itself, the dishes at Trastevere Taipei generally fell short. That spark, that depth of flavor that defines genuine Roman cuisine, seemed to be somewhat lost in translation. It's a peculiar feeling to see the esteemed "Sabatini" name on your plate, a promise of quality and tradition, and then find the food doesn't quite sing the same glorious Roman opera. The ambition is there, the lineage is clear, but the execution, on this occasion, didn't transport us to the bustling, flavorful streets of Trastevere, Rome. The Verdict: If you're seeking a pleasant Italian-ish meal in Taipei with smart tableware, Trastevere might fit the bill. However, if you're chasing the robust, authentic taste of Rome and have high expectations based on its Sabatini connection, you might find, as we did, that the experience is a bit underwhelming. It's a restaurant with a famous Roman name, but it seems some of that Roman magic might have gotten a little jet-lagged on its way to Taipei. Maybe we are sad because we had high hope for this restaurant. Meal type: Dinner Price per person: NT$2,000+ Food: 2 Service: 3 Atmosphere: 3
