My husband and I had such a special night in Kyoto thanks to this restaurant. The chef and his wife made us feel so welcome, and the food, atmosphere, and service were truly unforgettable. It took me some time to find the words to not only describe the experience at Taira, but what it meant to my wife and I after having one of the most unique nights in Kyoto, maybe in all of Japan. Our wonderful hosts were the chef and owner of Taira, and his partner. Both welcoming and charming, making us feel at home as they prepared our experience for the night. The restaurant didn't feel like any restaurant, it felt like being inside someone's home. The seating for perhaps 6 or 8 people in the whole extablishment made sure it was intimate. The dishes were unique. All made from seasonal ingredients locally sourced from the region. Each one delicate but flavorful, leaving you more than satisfied. I would point out there was also a playfulness to each dish, as the chef laid out different sauces and seaso wings to try with certain dishes. Behind each dish there was always a curious host asking about us and sharing their stories. Perhaps that's what was so charming about our time there. We were sharing an evening with the chef and his partner as if we were in their living room having a meal while getting to know one another. Perhaps it's why they started their business, to connect with others, maybe it naturally developed into such. Whatever the reason, the experience alone is worth your time. As we thanked them for an unforgettable night, he told us experiences like this were once in a lifetime before walking outside with us and seeing us off.
