Indian food is good at this place. Nicely cooked butter chicken is what a lot of tourists try here. The pleasant staff meets you at Taj Mahal all year round.

Great place for the price, quality and quantity when you’re feeling like something Indian! They serve rice in large bowls to share so you will never run out of rice! I also appreciate that they have vegan options available.

I ordered the vegetable korma and it was delicious, the flavor a lovely blend of spices and creaminess. The only thing is that I asked for Indian hot but it wasn’t in the least spicy, which was disappointing! Overall still a great dish. Their naan breads are tasty, not tough at all to bite into. I personally like their garlic naan as I can’t stand eating plain bread-like foods.

Also ordered their gulab jamun and really enjoyed those! They were soft and squishy, each bite released some of the sweet syrup. It has a spongy texture but when soaked it stays firm and keeps its bounce. I could taste the milk just slightly but not the cheese, and the sugar syrup was a great accompaniment. The syrup was very sweet though, I personally could tolerate it and thought it went well with the balls.

Best butter chicken in Dunedin. Be prepared for a long wait and drunk students on a Saturday but otherwise quiet. Staff aren’t overly friendly but always nice.

Taj Mahal is great for their steal lunch combo, however their curries are hit or miss. The butter chicken is really sweet and not to my liking. The saag (spinach curry base) curries are so tasty and have so much depth in flavour in comparison to the other sauces - don't let the colour turn you off. My favourite is the saag aloo (potato with spinach) as the potato is always cooked perfectly and goes so well with the sauce. The naan is always soft and fluffy and rice is always well cooked.
