Tanuki is pretty near Nijo Castle. Japanese cuisine is a must-taste one at this restaurant. Taste nicely cooked fish.
Tanuki is recommended for the appealing staff. Google gives it 4.5 so you can select this place to spend a good time here.

What a delightful experience! The couple who run this restaurant are kind, cheerful, and patiently willing to work with foreigners stumbling through an order with google translate (though we mainly just pointed to pictures from google.) They recommended unique and quality sake (with cool labels!) and showed photos of food to help us order. The food was delicious and the vibe was convivial, all locals, which we loved. When in doubt, just type “chefs choice” in translate and point to pictures. Amazing experience and great food. Parts of Kyoto are overrun with tourists, so we understand why restaurants don’t want to deal with them or are curt. We really appreciated the thoughtfulness and open-mindedness of the owners - she observed I was “vegetariano” by my order and asked about my partner’s tattoo! Thank you to Tanuki & its wonderful owners for the best experience on our last night in Kyoto! Meal type: Dinner Price per person: ¥2,000–3,000 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Vegetarian options: I had delicious tofu (with green onions & ginger), kamo eggplant with a slightly sweet glaze, and a small side of noodle/egg salad. The host noticed I wasn’t eating my partner’s fish and asked “vegetariano?” but not sure how specific one could learn about ingredients if diners are strict vegan.
