Located in a strip shopping center way off the beaten path, Taqueria La Costena has little ambiance. When we walked in, one half of the restaurant was dimly lit and the other half was under bright fluorescent lights. Hand-made signs in Spanish are tacked up on all the walls. We didn't see any employees, and there were only a few customers. A telenovela was playing loudly in the background. My hub side-eyed me but I figured, we're here - let's give it a go. We grabbed a menu off the counter and took a seat in the bright area in front of the counter. An older woman then walked out from the back and greeted us with a friendly "hola". After giving us a few minutes to look at the menu, she took our orders. I ordered the chicken fajitas ($10). Hub ordered the Asada torta (8). Low-cal drink choices are few so we settled on water, which was served with lime. Red and green sauces were brought to our table along with silverware. Fresh steaming rice and homemade refried beans were brought next. Then, after hearing it being prepared in the back, the most massive sizzling platter of colorful peppers, onions and chicken was brought out, along with three homemade flour tortillas. The torta served to my husband, with homemade bread and generous filling of chopped steak, cheese, lettuce and tomato, was big enough for two. After having my fill, I had enough leftovers for two meals. Hub said the bread was so good he couldn't stop eating his sandwich, so no leftovers for him. For the value, and because the servings are so generous and so tasty, I can see myself returning again. If what you're looking for is some great authentic Mexican food, then you must give this place a try.
