On holiday we came to Riga for the city festival and were shocked by how many people were in the Old Town that day. Every restaurant and shop was fully packed. For some reason we stopped by Uncle Vanya to have a look at the menu, it was really busy inside too, but one of the waiters immediately called us over and said that a table had just become available and he could quickly get it ready for us. We got a bit shy and almost walked away, as we usually do, but decided to give it a try. :). We waited literally just a couple of minutes, got seated, were given the menus and offered drinks straight away. It was a nice touch, especially considering the place was completely full. The food didn’t take too long either. I had the beef stroganoff and my wife had pike cutlets, and both were really tasty. We definitely enjoyed our meal. We probably won’t be back in Riga anytime soon, so I don’t know if we’ll get another chance to visit this place, but it was a really nice experience and left us with very positive impressions. I was turned away from Tevocis Vana when it was maybe 10% full on a Sunday evening. "Oh I'm sorry, if you don't have a reservation, we can't seat you," the host said, gesturing at the empty restaurant. Was it because I'm American? Or underdressed? Or with a male companion? Who knows. But when I called 30 minutes later to try make a reservation for the same evening, the host gave me a choice of times. So, be a well-dressed, straight Russian, and maybe you can dine at one of the many empty tables.
