Pre-lockdown experience (duh). Had I known that The 502 Bistro would have been my last indoor dining experience at a restaurant for over a year and a half, I would have chosen more wisely. I don't want to dance on its grave (I don't have particularly strong feelings one way or the other about it) but it amazes me how difficult F&B businesses have it in Norton Commons. I don't get it. You have a captive audience of very wealthy people who can patronize you without needing to drive to get to you. This should be a slam dunk. I don't understand why the problems persist out that way. Or, maybe I do. Despite it being an unnaturally warm early winter's day, the venue was pretty empty. I can *sort* of chalk it up to the fact that it was the day of the UK/UL game but, usually, venues with big TVs and plenty of booze do well on that game day. The dining room was sparsely filled with (what I presumed were) neighborhood locals. As we were want to do the days after Christmas, mom & I were driving around our old haunts, checking in with friends and on old houses. In any case, despite there not being a bunch of people in the restaurant, we still had to wait (if ever so briefly) for a table. And, wait again for service. And, wait again for menus. And, a longer wait for food... that included a (wait for it) salad. You note the theme? The nice setting was the biggest plus I could give. Large windows. Well-apportioned dining room. Attractive tables. This should have been an easy win. The service was more accidental than intentional. I won't call it (the disregard) personal. I think it was par for the course. The menu bored me. There was nothing there I hadn't seen before and nothing that inspired me to try. I finally settled on a Southwest Salad that was more greens than anything else. Save for an errant tortilla strip and hard-to-find bean, I didn't know what made my $1x plate of greens 'southwest.' My mom seemed equally bored with her sandwich and fries but she smiled through it. Our server checked on us once. I flagged her down to get the check. She obliged. I think UK was up. We paid. We left. As I did so, I made a note that I'd, likely, never go out of my way to return. How prescient.
