A Tale of Two Timings: When the Wait Outlasts the Meal. Some meals are meant to be savored, and some evenings are for catching up with old friends not seen for a long time. On a recent Monday night, a quiet evening that should have been conducive to both, my group and I chose this promising-looking bar menu. Initial impressions of the stunning bar & restaurant area also added to the excitement. What we found was an experience where the wait far outweighed the reward. Our dining experience began with a sense of disjointedness. The bar menu (both drinks and food), while appealing, was delivered in a piecemeal fashion that left us scratching our heads. Notepads and pens were at the ready to take orders before we’d seen the menu! After a 30-minute wait, a starter selection of Mac and cheese bites, olives, and smoked almond nuts began to arrive—but only the bites at first. The olives and nuts followed later only after asking, an odd staging for what should have been a simple starter selection. The main course was a similar story, but with an even longer wait. Around forty-five minutes passed between our starter and the arrival of our four orders of burgers and chips. For what was a quiet Monday, the lack of attention from staff was notable. Throughout this extensive wait, no one offered to refresh our drinks, leaving us to nurse our empty glasses while our appetites waned. The few times we were asked if we wanted anything else we had to ask for updates on the food, or ask for water. When the food finally arrived, it was a culinary paradox. The flavors were undeniably good. The burgers were delicious and well-presented, however the portions of some of our order were disappointingly small. The most glaring example was the beetroot salad, a main course option (our group of four had ordered it to share) priced at £12 that could have easily passed for a starter. Its astonishingly small size left a bitter taste, even with the vibrant flavors. Two of our party continued to a desert course; a very nice sticky toffee pudding and very slightly undercooked soufflé were once again slow from the pass. Ultimately, while the food showed flashes of genuine quality, the noticeable lacklustre service and bafflingly slow kitchen on a quiet night made for an experience that felt both anticlimactic and overpriced. When you're paying full price, you expect full service, even on a Monday. In this case, the wait was the main event where a start to finish experience was three hours long, leaving us with a hunger that was never truly satisfied. Price per person: £50–60 Food: 4 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 4 Vegetarian offerings: Clearly labeled vegetarian dishes Vegetarian options: One vegetarian option that is not a salad.
