(4.5 stars) Having a breakfast standard—mine is currently chilli eggs—is an easy way to benchmark cafes. The Berry General Store makes a mean chilli eggs ($21) using Umami Papi, the same crunchy chilli oil we use at home. This breakfast employs a pair of fried Kangaroo Valley Pastured Eggs, which are also sold in their produce store. They’re flavoursome with runny, deep orange yolks, a testament to the hens free-range foraging on a regenerative farm with a low stocking density (40–400 hens per hectare). Try them poached as Turkish eggs ($26) on a bed of tangy labneh and kale that’s been cooked hard enough to make it pleasing. Sourdough toast and a hint of chilli anchovy butter completes the plate, which I enjoyed as much as the chilli eggs. Ordering is done at the counter, you just need to nominate which part of the large historic cafe you’ll be seated in. Wrapped in ivy and shaded by hedges with rays of dappled morning light protruding through, the front verandah is a pleasant place to start your day. While you wait for your White Horse coffee—enjoyable as a flat white ($5/small)—peruse the fridges (there’s a reasonable selection of natural wine) and shelves. There were even some products I hadn’t seen before, from Lard Ass cultured butters to Natures Farmer Sea sea moss to Gaga’s Gut Loving Kimchi Ketchup ($17) that I snaffled for myself. Even the cake counter holds interest. Plus you can take home some of those lovely eggs Meal type: Breakfast Price per person: $20–40
