DO NOT USE THE CAKE MILLER IN RUBERY!! We ordered a cake for my Mums 60th birthday. The owner / employee was shown a photo of a tall American style buttercream cake, decorated with flowers and leaves (see photo attached), and said she could do what we asked. My grandparents picked up the cake on Friday and it looked absolutely nothing like what we had asked for. Not only did it not even closely resemble the photo, it was poorly made. It had been made with fondant and not buttercream. The fondant had cracks in, the cake was collapsing on the one side, the support posts were sticking out of the top of the cake, the flowers were falling off. We were gutted. It had cost £84. Unfortunately for me, my grandparents are not confrontational people so they left with the cake not feeling like they could express their true opinion. I called the shop, and expressed how upset I was. There were many excuses… they can’t plagiarise other people’s photos, the cake should’ve been kept in the fridge to protect the sugar work but we’d asked if it needed to and she had said it didn’t. When I called her out on this she explained that the actual cake didn’t need refrigerating but the sugar work did… what was I supposed to do? Remove the fondant and just refrigerate that?! Apparently we’d made the marks and cracks in the cake, and caused it to collapse on the one side by not handling it gently. All not true. The phone call didn’t get me anywhere; she refused a 50% refund and due to the time I couldn’t return the cake to the shop. It didn’t help her colleague was shouting down the phone in the background. Luckily my best friend owns a biscuit baking company and was able to help salvage the decoration of the cake at least before the surprise party on Saturday afternoon so it looked aesthetically pleasing. We removed the fondant to find that the bottom layer of the cake was sliced far too thin, hence the collapse. There were layers of fondant between slices, nothing I’d seen before, and the flowers were inedible. Teeth breaking!! We cut the cake at the party, and those who ate it spat it out due to it being too sweet and undercooked. My mum went to the shop today after finding out what happened. She was told that we’d caused the damage to the cake, that I shouldn’t have redecorated it, that there wasn’t fondant in the middle (see photos), that it had collapsed due to poor handling, that she uses a manufactured cake mix rather then individual ingredients so it wasn’t too sweet, and it was definitely cooked. She wasn’t willing to try the cake which my mum had taken with her funnily enough. Probably didn’t want to get diabetes due to the sheer amount of sugar in it. She wasn’t willing to find a solution, at first refusing any kind of refund until my Mum pushed for £30 to reimburse my Nan. That £30 doesn’t even cover the cost of the ingredients to rectify the cake decoration. A lot of excuses, lack of professionalism, no empathy towards the customer and sub standard cakes. If you do not have the capabilities to recreate a design then you should refuse the job. End of
