The Grafton is relaxing. The menus are diverse and the food always delicious. The Chef at The Clare is imaginative in healthy and wholesome cuisine. The regular patrons can only offer praise every day! Highly recommended if you have a friend or relative with whom you can dine.

Excellent food. Good service. Fine chef. But not open to the public. This is the fine dining restaurant at the Clare.

Let me be clear: my wife and I did not eat here. We weren't allowed to. While staying at the Ambassador on Goethe, I looked on YELP under "reservations". The Grafton had great ratings and was a short walk away. I made reservations for two with immediate confirmation of same. Later, while reading their review section, a reviewer made a comment that he was a guest of people who live in the Clare...the seniors residence that the Grafton is located in. I saw nothing else on YELP to indicate that the general public couldn't eat there. To be safe (I thought) I phoned the restaurant and got their phone message. There was no mention of any restrictions, nor did it indicate that non residents must be invited to dine with residents. So... we left and walked the 8 or so blocks in 90 degree heat. Arriving in the lobby of the Clare, we tell the reception people we are here to eat at the Grafton. I am instructed to go through a short security check/COVID screening. No biggie. They then ask us what residents we are the guests of. I explain no one. They then call up to the restaurant to see if our reservation is valid and it is left to the receptionist to deliver the bad news to us that while we have a reservation...we cannot eat there without an invite! WTF?!!! Why show your establishment on YELP which is clearly a means for the General Public to find eateries if you have a restaurant that isn't open to the public...but if you do...why isn't there any visible mention, and ideally, a check in the reservation system to guard against uninvited guests? Next; shouldn't your establishment have a mention of this on your phone message? And finally...shouldn't the reception people be instructed to inquire first whom invited you before the security check. In any case, we were turned away feeling like fools back into the oven that is Chicago in summer on a Friday night at 7:15 without dinner reservations or a a plan B. So no...while I didn't eat there I have no problem telling the management of the Grafton to go to Hell.
