Looking forward to a great lunch date with my wife today. We drove 100km to go to The Rocks Mornington for some fresh seafood by the bay and we were definitely disappointed. Arriving, the view from the restaurant over the marina is stunning. Seated we ordered the Sardines and Oysters for Entrée. Oysters were small but fresh and well prepared; however, the Sardines were inedible. Dry and seemingly precooked (or overcooked) on a bed of onion and chickpeas. It definitely wasn't what my wife was hoping for (we've previously had fresh grilled Sardines that were divine) and so they were sent back. Thankfully, the restaurant replaced the entrée with calamari which was okay, some pieces still had uncooked batter and were tough. But it was edible, .. just. Main was another matter. $49 for what was literally half a piece of Snapper. This was mostly overcooked with a small piece in the middle still moist. The plate was predominately filled with 3/4 a cup of marinated roasted red capsicum topped with limp salad leaves which should have joined the bin yesterday. Poor form. Whole Flounder was underwhelming but okay. Tasted like it had been frozen as lacked flavour, also under seasoned. Double cooked fries were the highlight, which says a lot. I mentioned our disappointment to the restaurant manager when we left who thankfully removed the inedible Sardines from the bill. It makes me think that the head chef has lost his passion if he is prepared to let food like that leave the kitchen. It definitely wasn't worth the $200 price and we won't be back. Dear John,Thank you for your feedback. We source our seafood daily and focus on keeping it fresh and simply prepared, though personal tastes can sometimes differ. While we appreciate all feedback, some of the words used might sound a bit harsh. At this time of year, we serve hundreds of guests each day, and we always encourage any issues to be raised during the visit so they can be addressed immediately. For accuracy, our double-cooked items refer to our chat potatoes, not fries, and our prices — particularly for fish — are reviewed daily based on market conditions. We’re truly sorry the experience didn’t meet your expectations, and your comments have been noted and shared with the team.Regards,Enrico

It is unlikely I will be back, the pipis and lup cheong entree was superb very tasty, but the next entree of octopus legs was soft and tender, but the pepper broth was disgusting. It was way too hot as if it had been doubled peppered, now I love curries and hot foods, but this was way over the top, maybe the chef forgot and peppered it twice by accident. It gave me gastric reflux all night long and stomach cramps it was very uncomfortable. The King George crumbed whiting my wife had was excellent, not one bone, but my whiting had at least 25 to 30 small bones and cartilage bone, really making it not a nice meal.At $166 for the meal I probably would have been better off buying fish and chips in the main street of Mornington.Sorry but not a happy diner.
