Exceptional food over a long lunch provides for a quite unique experience. Go for the matching wines if you are not the designated driver, as they complement the flavors of the dishes very well. Dare I say the Zin House is the most underwhelming hatted restaurant. We were fine with the high price tags and all (as hatted restaurants should be), but the dishes (yes, not one, but 2 consecutive dishes) actually had LIVE insects crawling and having a party in the food. We showed the first one to the waitress after we found a live >1.5cm long caterpillar in the second course (goats curd and melon) but we were told she couldn’t do anything else apart from apologise and we need to understand that this is an organic restaurant that doesn’t use pesticides. We were given an option to skip to the next course or get the same dish re-made. We were fine with giving them another chance to bring us a fresh re-made dish, which was alright the second time. However, when the next course (pasta) came, we saw many live small black bugs on the edible decorative flower petals - we only noticed it after our experience from the previous dish, otherwise we would have just mixed in all the extra protein. After voicing out our dissatisfaction again, another waitress came and stressed they are an organic farm. Yes, I understand that, but even if they are organic and do not use pesticides, we would expect a restaurant of this calibre to at least thoroughly wash their produce. She then emphasised again that they did wash the ingredients - which is more alarming if this is the result after washing. Anyway, their pasta was perfectly cooked (when we requested no flowers in the replacement dish). Their desserts were all perfectly done as well and the banya nut ice cream was actually one of the best desserts we’ve had. Overall, a disappointing experience for the price and a one-hatted restaurant, but at least we got several apologies and one free mocktail. We truly got an organic farm to table experience. From the minute you arrive you feel welcomed and immersed in the experience of dining at Zin. At a recent lunch we savoured some amazing food with impeccable service. The chef really works hard to bring to your table the freshest, tastiest and original taste temptations. A very special experience not to be missed when in Mudgee.
