The low score is primarily for the service charge, 12.5% added automatically which may be discretionary and is stated on the menu, but in the smallest of print right at the bottom of the page. We'd paid the bill based on it showing the correct items and only as an afterthought did I think it was a bit high and notice the service charge. I feel this is underhanded and would not come back for that reason. I wasn't planning to tip, not because of the service which was OK, but because the Tich Dip (Roast beef in Ciabatta with pickles, cheese and gravy dip) contained an overpowering amount of horse radish, an ingredient not even mentioned on the board. My wife's fish n chips were good, so I would have left it at a polite mention that the Tich Dip combination didn't in my view work. However any restaurant worth its salt doesn't need to impose a hidden service charge and for that reason we felt the need to warn others and won't be returning. Found Tichborne Arms as a central location to meet up with old friends as we were all coming from different places and I was very happy I picked this place! The food was excellent (lamb flatbread and the massive double cheeseburger eaten). Nice beers available, too. Staff friendly and considerate. Nothing to complain about at all!
