I went to Torimatsu because of their local specialty, "barazushi," a lasagna looking dish made with layered rice and topped with shiitake mushrooms, peas, shredded egg, kamaboko, pickled ginger, and grilled then sauteed with soy sauce and crumbled on top. I ordered the Tango set meal, which included really fresh sashimi (and some of the best wasabi I have had here), fish-stock soup, fish tempura, pickled vegetables, and dessert. This was an incredibly large lunch for 2,100 yen. The menu is actually quite large, and they have the entire menu in English and Chinese (as well as Japanese, of course). I heard that the restaurant is also quite well-known for their udon, but no one I was with ordered that today. The restaurant also has a variety of locally caught fish, local vegetables, and other ingredients. There is a second floor for larger parties, and I quite liked the traditional décor in the restaurant. We ate in the corner on Japanese-style tatami mats, but there were also tables. While my lunch was more than I would normally pay for lunch, the value was incredible because of the amount of excellent food I was served. But the restaurant also offers other satisfying set meals for under 1,000 yen. One of the people I was with ordered the local, fried chicken set menu, which also looked great.
