Tonight I met Idio, a splendid eighty-four year old who still runs his bar, the Torrital in the Solari area. This place is now a permanent part of the landscape, having been continuously active since the 1960s. He brings the tables and chairs outside, asks you what you want: "Have you ever drank a Negroni here? No? Well, up until now you've only had drinks then, because the Negroni must be eaten, not drunk" and on to scientific and exact explanations on how to combine it with the pistachios of the aperitif. Apart from that, nothing else but chips and olives: today the Torrital has the M4 excavations in front of it, and large exposed pipes pass underneath it. Idio arranges the tables overlooking this long and narrow void. Idio is the soul of Milan. An Italian-style billiard table behind shop windows with prices in lira, but recent photos of Inter hanging. The anecdotes about past jobs, and about who has passed through that place. I could continue with the details of a moving place, stuck decades ago and yet still so simple, suitable and contemporary as only something Milanese can be. Go to Torrital, if you can, and ask for a Negroni too: you can really feel the soul of a city inside. The heart of Milan has always been hidden, but if you find it, it will win you over.
