If you feel hungry after visiting Ryugen-ji Temple, have a meal at this restaurant. Take a break and eat good salmon sashimi, sea urchin and nigiri. The cosy atmosphere of Totorou makes guests feel relaxed and have a good time. The atmosphere of hospitality of this place highly depends on the staff, that is well-trained here. WHEWEE this place is cramped! You can feel the steam fill up this place like a sauna. Make sure you can take off layers when you come eat here! BUT the food was fantastic for the price. My friend and I ate a lot—ordered the sashimi set (only 500 yen), potato salad, oden (radish, tofu, sausage, octopus, avocado), chicken donburi bowl, drinks—and the total came out to 7300 yen. Which seemed very reasonable. But a omething gave my friend and I both stomach aches maybe the sashimi we both had the runs afterward. The workers here don’t speak English but they’re so fun and accommodating. Make sure to make a reservation before you go! Price per person: ¥3,000–4,000 Food: 4 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

A traditional Japanese restaurant often feels tucked away from the noise of the city, hidden along a modest street. As you slide open the door, the outside world seems to soften instantly, replaced by the gentle warmth of wood and stillness. Behind the counter, the chef works quietly and with intention. Movements are unhurried, shaped by years of practice. The menu is often seasonal and concise, focusing on a few carefully prepared dishes rather than variety for its own sake. Each plate highlights the natural character of the ingredients, without overwhelming them. In essence, a traditional Japanese restaurant isn’t designed to impress loudly—it invites you to slow down, to notice, and to experience time in a gentler, more deliberate way. Wish I could give 0 Rating:. Food: meh. Just average izakaya stuff, nothing worth mentioning. Location: definitely NOT a hidden gem. If you accidentally go to Totorou 3 and show up late, don’t expect to be treated like a customer—more like some peasant begging for scraps. Customer service: ABSOLUTE TRASH. OVERALL: DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY. --- I went because a friend recommended it. From the start, the staff was rude on the phone, practically threatening we wouldn’t be let in if we were late. When we got there, I was squeezed at the counter with 2 women and 1 guy tucked away in a corner, and some woman *standing* right behind me—super awkward. Menu was tiny. My boyfriend and I ordered 2 drinks and 2 dishes. The staff *gave us attitude* for not ordering more. Seriously? We *would* have ordered more if there were more than 10 dishes total, especially since 8 were things we don’t eat. After finishing our first drinks, they pressured us to order again. We said no, and then one lady *ordered* us to shove the menus under the table. WHAT, AM I WORKING HERE? When I asked for tissues, the lady assumed I didn’t understand Japanese and snapped, 「トイレに行って取ってきて」. WHAT KIND OF HORRIBLE ATTITUDE IS THAT? 外国人だからって日本語わからないと思ってそんな言い方すんなよ。マジで最低。 日本で初めて、こんなババにあたって、本当に腹立った Until the food arrived, the staff hovered like hawks, eavesdropping on every word. CAN I GET SOME PRIVACY? WHY AM I BEING CONSTANTLY WATCHED WITHOUT PERMISSION?? When the dishes finally came, they insisted we take photos. はぁ?こんなまずいものの写真撮るの?! And the bill? They said cash only. NO warning about that anywhere. When we said we had no cash, suddenly they pulled out a POS machine. びっくり もし日本人しかカード使えないなら、最初からちゃんと説明しろ! TO THE STAFF: Get some manners. Stop being racist. You have zero service ethic and zero common sense. Food: 2 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1 Price per person: ¥3,000–4,000 Vegetarian options: Nope, the staff will scold you for being vegetarian and throw out of the store Dietary restrictions: Why bother coming here? Go somewhere with better service etiquette Parking space: Difficult to find parking Kid-friendliness: Dont bring your kids and traumatize them Wheelchair accessibility: Nope. They won’t let you in. Sorry dude
