Dinner #1:
* HILL COUNTRY MESQUITE BRISKET - "12 hour Slow Smoked" ($12): description says "smoked for 12 hours" - brisket was cooked well but had absolutely no taste nor smokey flavor at all. You either had to douse it with salt or drown it in BBQ sauce (but their homemade sauce was actually pretty good). Potato salad that came on the side had no flavor as well, and the only ingredients it seemed to have were potatoes and mayonnaise.
* HOUSE SMOKED BACON WRAPPED QUAIL ($15): you get 4 bite size pieces of quail meat wrapped in bacon. There was nothing "smoked" about this particular dish. In fact, the quail meat had a bitter taste to it, and was kinda dry. The sauce that comes with it was pretty good. How they can charge $15 for what amounts to about 4 ounces of meat is puzzling... at that price, you'd expect a whole roasted quail cut into quarters.
* CHICKEN VEGETABLE SOUP ($9): this actually wasn't bad, but the chicken pieces in the soup were pretty tough for what chicken meat should be when cooked in broth.
* PORT WINE POACHED PEAR dessert ($9): this was actually pretty good. Menu description said it's topped with candied pecans, but didn't come with any. Didn't seem to detect any port wine, though.
SUMMARY: Brisket meat was pretty good, and was able to eat most of the portions without much complaint (3 out of 5 stars)
Dinner #2:
* Full order of SMOKED NEW BRAUNFELS JALAPENO RING SAUSAGE ($18): Yes the name sounds really good, right? However, there is nothing "ring" about this sausage. This basically came as 4 dry hot links, like the standard sausage links you get from the grocery store. They were dry, not very spicy, and pretty salty. The meat that's used to make the sausage is too lean, so no juice nor flavor. Actually the best thing about this dish is the cole slaw that came on the side. I barely made it through eating one sausage and didn't touch the rest - what a waste of $18! Their menu even spikes this out as a "House Specialty" - the hot links that I get from Costco are MUCH better microwaved!
* JUMBO LUMP BLUE CRAB CAKES ($16): Yes that's right, you get 2 little crab "mini pancakes" for $8 a piece. There is no "lump" crab meat at all in these... the shreds of crab were grounded/mixed down so fine into individual threads. It's like the meat you get out of a can - just a bunch of thin strings. The cakes were SO salty, I could barely make it through one. In fact, I had to force myself to finish one just to justify my decision to order this. And I typically like saltier foods, so if I'm unable to stomach this, it must be really darn salty! However, the tomato jalapeno jam that came with it was pretty good. But the overall value for this appetizer is absolutely horrible.
* PORTABELLA FRIES ($12): Another terrible concoction. You get 6 strips of portabella mushroom in a breaded deep-fried batter. They were fried way too long so the bread batter became a hard, salty shell encapsulating the mushroom. Could barely eat one of the strips. However, the Cajun aioli that came with it was pretty good - too bad I didn't get a chance to use hardly any of it! Another horrible value appetizer (hope you are noticing the trend here)
* HILL COUNTRY TORTILLA SOUP ($6): What a huge disappointment - I mean, how do you manage to screw up tortilla soup? Well, Masterson's sure knows how to. The tortilla shell that is served with the soup was stale, so I couldn't even eat that. Menu description says it contains "fajita-marinated diced chicken breast" but the chicken meat had absolutely no flavor at all. The thick soup itself barely had any flavor so after mixing it with the tortilla strips, it became an overall bland dish. Since I barely ate the sausage, crab cakes, and portabella fries, I had to pretty much try to finish the soup as there was nothing else left to eat (and I didn't even finish the soup).
SUMMARY: Probably the worst dinner I've had in years, if not ever. I only ate about 20% of the food. You know it's bad when you wish there were a McDonald's around the corner after you've spent around $60 for a meal. You figure out of 4 different menu items, at least 1 would bounce to be decent, right? WRONG (0 out of 5 stars)
Breakfast:
* STEAK AND EGG TACOS - "New York Strip, Scrambled Eggs Aged Cheddar, sour Cream and Pico de Gallo, Breakfast Potatoes" ($16): This "sounds" good, right? It's too bad the chef can't even follow what the menu says. This plate comes with 2 tacos and a side of breakfast potatoes (aka home fries). The breakfast potatoes were actually seasoned well, but tasted like they were made a few hours ago (or even the day before). Each taco contained powdered scrambled eggs (that's right, for $16 they won't even make you fresh scrambled eggs) and 2 strips of unseasoned, dry, well-done NY steak. To make things worse and add to the blandness, it did not come with cheddar cheese, sour cream, nor pico de gallo (which I tried during dinner and totally sucked). Luckily I had the foresight to request a couple of side bowls of salsa to try and dip the tacos in, but that really didn't help (although their homemade salsa is decent). Did not even come with any ketchup (hello, you're serving me breakfast potatoes!). So yes, another dish that was only about 25% eaten
* BANANA NUT FRENCH TOAST - "Homemade Banana Nut Bread French Toast, Powdered Sugar, Strawberry Compote" ($12): OK, I thought this would be a "safe" pick because how in the hell do you mess up French toast? I guess if the banana nut bread you use isn't that great, then the French toast won't be that great. I really thought I'd be able to at least finish this dish, but when you wish you had the banana nut bread French toast from Denny's instead, for less than half the price, you know you've hit rock bottom.
I just can't believe the food this restaurant serves for their menu prices. It's pretty bad when you wouldn't mind paying the same price but eating McDonalds instead - at least I'd enjoy and finish the food that was given to me. Our of 3 meals, I only finished the brisket and poached pair. I had to force myself to finish the quail because it was so darn expensive for what you get. It's bad when nothing seems to be fresh, and to make things worse, not even cooked with any type of culinary skill that you'd expect from a chef working at a nice resort. The resort is nice, but the restaurant is a complete disaster. I would easily go to any fast-food restaurant over Masterson's. At least when you get a breakfast sandwich at Jack in the Box, you get a real fresh egg in your sandwich for $1.79. At Masterson's, you pay $16 for a breakfast dish and get lukewarm powdered scrambled eggs. If I ever come back to this resort on business, I'll just live off of snacks instead of ordering food from Masterson's - YES it's THAT BAD. If I've eaten at a restaurant once and had a bad experience, I might just treat it as a fluke - but when you've had 3 meals from the same restaurant over a stretch of 4 days, and just about everything coming out of that kitchen is bad, that's no fluke, folks. It's really sad when a chef can't even cook the way dishes are described on the menu.
Just look at the dinner menu and you'll see how ridiculous the prices are. For example, you too can get a full order of a smoked half chicken for $24. Umm, last time I checked, a full half chicken is still half a chicken. So what if you order the half order of smoked half chicken for the mere "discounted" price of $18 - do you get half of a half of chicken which equals a quarter of a chicken?
This place has the nerve to describe various dishes as "smoked" but there's nothing smoked nor tasty about anything on the menu. Menu descriptions sound good, but don't match up to what they're pushing.
If you've made it this far in my review (I know this is really long, but I am a believer of backing up my claims with actual data), I do want to point out that this restaurant makes pretty good home-made sauces and salsas, so that's one good thing going for this place... again, if there were a way to submit a ZERO star rating, I would. Other reviewers who give this place an above-average rating must have no taste buds. After having a few meals at this place, I'm not even sure I have any taste buds left.
