most disappointing thai food in my life. puff pastry appetisers we’re bland and mushy, devoid of texture and flavour. suspicions raised we thought we’d play it safe with the pad thai. it was worse, overly sweet and gluey, with essential elements like lime, egg and bean sprouts under-represented. my friehd fri the neighborhood who i was visiting had been disappointed years before but — under its new name — thought we should give it a chance. big mistake. we paid our bill (discounted 20% only after i asked to speak with the owner) and went out for pizza at Fresco’s on 187th street, a convenient 6 blocks away. A favorite restaurant for more than two years, Tung Thong 181 is no longer good. The noodles seem to have changed and flavors are off. Until the pandemic, I took friends there to eat in person. They loved it. We ordered out multiple times during 2020 and early 2021 and had great meals, particularly with chicken and veggie duck. The last few have been borderline inedible. We ended up throwing them out after a few bites. I don't recognize the staff during the last few visits. Maybe they have new owners or something. In any case, there are way better options further up in Inwood. A real shame, though. this place was genuinely good once.
