A MICHELIN star: cuisine of great finesse. Worth the step!

The interior’s keynote black bespeaks modern dining; the cuisine, modern Chinese with further innovations, confirms the impression. The concept of Chinese-French fusion cuisine adds uniqueness, exemplified by the foie gras sandwiched between two thin, crisp wafers redolent with Shaoxing wine... More info

Velrosier was a very welcome change of pace in Kyoto. Once you leave the tourist-crowded streets and step into the dark room of Velrosier, you appreciate the quiet and professional atmosphere and are able to settle down for an amazing meal. The dishes were perfectly executed and a nice mix of Chinese, Japanese and European cuisine. The staff was friendly and very (appropriately) attentive. Quite a few dishes aimed in a similar flavor direction but this was completely fine for us since they were all so well executed. Will definitely go again, if we happen to be in Kyoto again. - visited in May 2026. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Meal type: Dinner Price per person: ¥10,000+

Flawless execution of elevated Chinese cuisine, well deserving of a Michelin star. You can taste-and watch-the passion in every bite. With an open concept to the space, you can see the chef and his team at work. Each plate-no matter the size of the portion-gets a tremendous amount of attention. Even dishes similar to ones I had before were so much better. I'd recommend lunch here-it is a great deal! Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Meal type: Lunch Price per person: ¥7,000–8,000

Once this restaurant had 2 Michelin stars (as you can also see at the counter in the restaurant's entrance). However: these days this restaurant has one Michelin star. The food:. The food was skillfully made, and you can clearly tell that the chefs are professional and work with the finest ingredients available in the region. However: Too much food and too fastly served (one can mistakenly think they wanted us out as soon as possible). Furthermore: most of the dishes, unfortunately, were not special enough (they did not have distinct or cheerful flavors in our opinion). Our favorite dish was the splendid and wonderful A5 wagyu beef (it melted in our mouths). Drinks: we chose wonderful wine and champagne to pair our meal with, with the help of a wise and experienced sommelier. In conclusion: come hungry because you will be fed till your stomach explodes.
